Tomorrow, 19th of July 2022, at 17:45 CEST we are going to present the SINOPTICA project results at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), sesson “Prediction of Severe Weather and Natural Hazards”. The title of our work is “A NOWCASTING ALGORITHM OF SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS AT LOCAL SPATIAL SCALE: THE VENEZIA CASE STUDY” where we describe the methodology developed to nowcast the extreme weather events applied to a convective cell developed over Venice airport the 7th of July 2019.

The 7th of July 2019, the Veneto region was affected by precipitation with a prevalent character of thunderstorms, locally very intense, associated with hail and strong wind gusts. We ran a WRF Data Assimilation system (WRFDA) with the 3D-VAR variational assimilation method having in input radar, weather stations, GNSS ZTD and lightning data, all the experiments simulated the convective system with a very high precision.
