The 4th of February 2021 our team from GReD srl went to the Astronomical Observatory “Giovanni Virginio Schiapparelli” located in Campo dei Fiori (Varese) to install a new GNSS low-cost receiver within the SINOPTICA project studies. The observatory is located just 22km away from the Malpensa airport (https://www.google.com/maps/place/G.V.+Schiaparelli+Observatoryfirstname.lastname@example.org,8.6824622,11z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x67352c254d74f77b!8m2!3d45.8684138!4d8.7706961), in the picture you can see the view from the terrace where the instrument is installed, towards the Malpensa airport.
The GNSS receiver is collocated with a lightning detector which was deployed within another SESAR project (CARGO). Those instruments together, will provide valuable in situ measurements to develop the nowcasting model over the area:
- The GNSS receiver is able to provide accurate estimations of Zenith Total Delay and thus Integrated Water Vapour, which are strictly connected to the development of severe weather;
- The lightning detector shows us how strong and quick the convection development is.
